After receiving over 91,000 tweets on Twitter last year, the Discovery Channel has decided to step up its use of social media after the uprising burst attention to prey upon new viewers for this year’s Shark Week.
To build up for the week long blood bath, the channel launched a contest running from June 13th to July 1st challenging fans to make a 30 second video commercial promoting Shark Week. The Discovery Channel also recruited SNL’s Andy Samberg to start as the “chief shark officer” to promote the event. This year the channel is also conducting a @SharkWeek trivia contest on Twitter and have developed a Live app for the iPhone and iPad that will collect all the shark week conversation on Twitter and Facebook and include extra behind the scene photos. If I needed a reason to switch from my Blackberry to the iPhone; I could not think of a better reason. So check out the top 16 videos of the Shark Week’s website then vote for your favorite, and see the top two ads run on the Discovery Channel during Shark week. And if the week itself isn’t gruesome enough, the channel hopes to surpass last year’s record of 30.8 million by throwing in seven new hours of programming chum to lure you in. So if that’s put a thirst for blood in your mouth, get your fix the week of July 31st and experience the hunt!
